2004 Sea-kayak and Adventure Trip Photo Gallery

2004 was an extremely dry year.  The low water level of the New Italio prevented us from floating the river as part of our Adventure Kayak/Float trips most of the season,  so we jet-boated down the Dangerous River instead and used the Italio Falls Trail as a day-hike activity.  We chose to avoid the Italio "drag/float",  although one of our trips coincided with one of the biggest storms of the year and an extremely flooded river.  Oh well.  Can't win them all,  I guess.

Look at the flooded water level of Italio Falls in these photos,  then compare it to the next trip.  The timing of this rain was wonderful for the health of our sockeye salmon run,  since the flood allowed the fish to migrate over the falls and into the lake.  Not so wonderful for a pup-tent camping trip.  We had absolutely no rain again until the first couple days of September,  so a lot of fish died,  unable to make it to the spawning grounds.  This day was probably the best Chum Salmon fishing I have ever seen on the Italio.  Pete only hooked a single fish the entire time we were at Italio Falls,  but it took him over 2 hours to land it.  A huge buck chum in the 18 pound range that all 4 of us pitched in to help land.  We had a nice sockeye run,  but a tremendous chum run for the Italio.  Not many pinks,  since the Italio has an odd-year return on pinks.

What a difference a little rain cam make...  or lack there of.  This trip continued after a jet-boat trip down the Dangerous River with several days of flyfishing for salmon and trout on the Akwe,  New and Middle Italio Rivers.  You can see those photos on the "August Flyfishing" gallery page.  This was the last trip of August,  so the Jones family and their huge trout will be at the bottom.
