Fly Fishing

Sport fishing isn't the only activity around, but with wild salmon runs as strong as ours, it is easy to forget that. We have six fantastic streams for fly fishing, waterfowling or jet-boating, all within a short 4-wheeler ride down the beach. Each river offers a unique experience for the avid angler. From raging glacial torrents, to meandering creeks and tributaries, these waters provide an unlimited variety of fishing and recreation opportunity.

River Fishing
Our camp sits on the edge of the beach, where several rivers and streams enter the ocean. All of our rivers are small and easily waded. We fish from the inter-tidal zone to several miles upstream, as well as the Italio Float - which covers about 16 miles from Italio Lake to the ocean mouth. Most of our clients focus their efforts on the salmon, although trout and char are always present. The water is clear and the fish are heavy. This is the ideal place for fly fishing.

My favorite river is the New Italio. With crystal clear water and sizable runs, this is a fly fisherman's dream. The sockeye season in June and July combines the finest salmon, with the best weather. Sockeye can be a real challenge to catch, but they are the most desirable meat and great fighters. In August, the Pink and Chum salmon arrive. Both will bite flies, or spoons, making this the ideal time for young families.

Coho salmon are the most fun to catch. They run in EVERY little creek and stream, providing some amazing and unusual places to fish. They start to appear in mid August and keep coming well into November and beyond. The New Italio and Akwe Rivers feature Alaska's heaviest and most spectacular Coho. We average between 11 and 13 pounds, as much as five pounds above the state average. Fish into the 20's are common, giving these two rivers a world-wide reputation. The Old and Middle Italio Rivers bring large quantities, that will literately bite anything you throw at them. These are tiny rivers where you have to work hard to wade over your knees, yet they are plugged full of salmon in the fall.

The King salmon holds the hearts of many outdoorsmen. These huge fish can reach up to 100 pounds and be the prize of a lifetime. Our Kings reach up to 50 pounds and average in the 20's and 30's. The Italio River King is smaller than elsewhere in Alaska, however it is the perfect size for a fly rod. What makes our King fishing so special is our secluded location, unlike the elbow-to-elbow fishing on the Kenai River. Italio River Adventures offers an experience well beyond anything else you've ever seen.

Lakes
A variety of trout and char call these same rivers home, although they can be a challenge when the voracious salmon are running. Throughout the year, Dolly Varden, Rainbow and Cutthroat abound in the streams, lakes and ponds of the foreland. Day hikes into remote never-been-fished lakes are a great way to explore our wilderness and catch resident trout, away from the salmon streams.

The Italio Float
In July and August, as the Sockeye salmon are reaching Italio Lake and climbing Italio Falls, a four-day hike-in river float of the entire Italio system will take your breath away. There are no roads anywhere, so this is a trip for those with an adventurous spirit and a passion for incredible fishing. To access Italio Lake, we begin by sea-kayaking through the icebergs of Harlequin Lake. A three mile overland hike brings us to the headwaters of the Italio and the start of our float. We camp along the river, stopping to fish where ever we choose. Spend all the time you want, where ever you want. Beautiful trout follow the Sockeye all along the upper reaches of the river. THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO OTHER HUMAN BEINGS ANYWHERE from the lake to within a half mile of the ocean beach. For a wilderness fly fishing trip, nothing in the world compares to our Italio Float.

Scenic Flight Tours

Alsek Air Service and Air Juneau operate Cessna aircraft, especially well suited for exploring the beauty and variety of the area. Yakutat is home to an amazing array of extremes. There are 17 named mountains over 14,500 feet high, all towering over the highest point in the lower 48. This area is so rugged and remote, many more have never been named. Your senses can easily be overwhelmed, since they all rise right out of the sea. Mt. Fairweather rises 15,300 feet, in only 15 miles from the surf. North America's second highest point, Mt. Logan at 19,545 feet, is a not-so-distant 40 miles from tidewater.

Pacific winter storms dump more snow in these mountains than on any other place on earth. The peaks are so high, this snow never has a chance to melt, so it settles into the largest ice fields and glaciers in the world, outside of Greenland and Antarctica. The crown jewel is the Hubbard, the largest tidewater glacier that rapidly advanced a decade ago, sealing off the Russell Fiord and threatening to flood the community of Yakutat with the resulting rise of that growing lake. Hubbard reaches up to 21 stories high, above the water. All those tiny little glaciers in Glacier Bay don't add up to this one mighty river of ice.

Then, there are the really big ones. Across Yakutat Bay, the Malaspina and Bering Glaciers are both larger than some east coast states. Imagine Rhode Island and Delaware covered with ice, over 1000 feet thick. You don't have to imagine, just call Italio River Adventures. We'll arrange for your arriving, or departing flight to take an extended detour over Yakutat's most spectacular scenery. If this bird's eye view interests you, there will be an additional fee charged by the air charter companies based on their hourly charter rate. This activity is very weather dependant, but well worth the taking and one of the only optional add-ons not included in our price.

Where in the world...

Yakutat is a tiny community, located at the base of the long, north/south border between Alaska and Canada. Because of the towering St. Elias Mountains and glaciers, Yakutat is extremely isolated. Even today, technology can't penetrate this massive barrier, where no roads exist to cut scars across the land, or bring the floods of tourists and industry. The internationally protected land that surrounds Yakutat for hundreds of miles ensures that our little paradise will remain wild and beautiful for centuries to come.

The Italio River system is actually three separate rivers, that drain a vast area if the Yakutat foreland, a crescent shaped and forest covered strip of land, sandwiched between the St. Elias Range and the Pacific Ocean. Our facility sits right on the beach, between two of the Italio Rivers. Although we see a handful of other people during the peak Coho season, most of the time we can go weeks without running into another human throughout the year.

A gravel road ends just outside of Yakutat, about 20 miles shy of the Italio. After arriving in Yakutat on Alaska Airlines, we will whisk you out in a Cessna to our isolated location. If you have a need to stay in touch with the hectic world of business, traffic and pollution, you will be sorely disappointed. Cell phones, pagers and TVs make lovely decorations, but that is about all. This is a place, where peace, tranquility, solitude, or white knuckle adventure makes the trappings of civilization disappear.

My family first came here in 1956 and had a mighty difficult time leaving. Maybe selling the house and cars and packing up the kids to disappear into the wilderness isn't for you... but at least you can taste the wonder with Italio River Adventures.
